Curiosity — 1978

Yellow Magic Orchestra — Computer Game

The Work

Computer Game is more than a composition. Built from the chirps of arcade cabinets, electronic pulses, and tight rhythmic loops, it feels like stepping inside a machine that is just beginning to wake up.

At a time when technology was often viewed as cold and distant, this piece did something unexpected: it gave the circuits a heartbeat. It made technology feel alive, playful, and human.

The Moment in His Life

In 1978, Sakamoto was not yet the reflective, seasoned figure the world would later come to know. He was a seeker, driven more by a restless curiosity than by any sense of certainty.

With the birth of Yellow Magic Orchestra, he stood at the edge of a new frontier, where culture, music, and technology finally began to merge. There were no rules to follow and no established path to walk.
