With Yellow Magic Orchestra, Sakamoto didn’t just play music; he predicted the future. Their pioneering use of synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers laid the foundation for techno and synth-pop.

The Cinema

His cinematic compositions were less about melody and more about the atmosphere of the soul. From the sweeping majesty of The Last Emperor to the haunting resonance of The Revenant.

1987 — 2015

The Ambient

In his final years, Sakamoto moved towards the “asynchronous”—capturing the sounds of melting glaciers, rain on plastic, and the silence between notes. async and 12 remain as his final meditations on existence.
